Is the Douyin search index a number of searches?

No. The trend-index (巨量算数) says in its own help that the search index is not the actual number of searches: it is a weighted sum the platform works out from searches for the keyword and related content. DataXAPI reads Douyin with 36 endpoints, from $0.0020 a call; a failed call is not charged.

The two keyword indexes

Its in-page help gives two keyword indexes, for overall volume and for search heat. The composite index is a weighted sum of related content, views and searches; the search index a weighted sum of the searches for the keyword and related content. The weights are not published.

So an index tells you how a keyword moves against its own past, or against another keyword on Douyin. It does not tell you how many people searched, and it is not on one scale with another platform's index.

Other figures with similar names

The trend-index's own topic boards have a topic index; DataXAPI's douyin.index.trends.list returns it as heat. Douyin's hot lists in the app have a heat value of their own; douyin.trends.list returns that as heat, read from another field of another board. Nothing published puts the two on one scale.

Getting the indexes

douyin.index.keywords.history takes keyword, or up to five as keywords, with since and until, and returns points, one a day, each with search_index and composite_index. Days are calendar days in China time (UTC+8), and a day's figure usually comes a day or two late.
